Featured Gallery
Posted On 03/10/2008 20:37:35 by artward

I am coming to the conculsion that the Featured Gallery which has fabulous work in it, is unbalanced in reflecting the essence of this sites aim.

'a community for photographers, models, studios, agents and all those associated with photography'

As pointed out by another member in another blog, of the last 120 images posted in the featured gallery, which is the default for non members,  7 or 8 are of a different subject matter.

There are many photographers on here who do varied work including editorial, abstracts, landscape, wedding, advertising, etc,.  Most photographers I know cover a variety of subject, specialise in one but are good in many.

If Folio is truly representing this 'community'  then why not reflect them in the featured gallery in a balanced way.

Also it is not encouraging for other photographers who maybe are not focused on female model work, when they arrive at the default gallery to find if full of model work.

Just an observation

Art,

Earlier on (like page 21, 22) there are landscape, wedding, architectural images in the featured gallery. It's probably more a case of not enough quality images of those genres being posted, than negligence. Now that you're know about the history and current intent, feel free to post what you like.

Sometimes I see (and have posted) stuff that really should be featured, but isn't. Such is the joy of subjectivity. There's only a handful of really good photographers on this site and you're one of them, so I'd hate to see you leave.

Glad to hear that. I hope everyone reads that too.

I still think a more balanced selection of subject/style images would demonstrate this in the featured gallery. It would also encourage more of the 'all' types of photography referred to and help keep a healthy balance that everyone can aspire to.

I know people have particular styles of work they dont like, or  may  find offensive but a balance featured section would certainly keep the playing field level for new people arriving.

After all they all pass through the non default gallery.

Thanks you for that clarification.

Let me put this on the record...
This site welcomes ALL types of photography... because the community is made up of photographers and models it will obviously attract more "model" type pictures than any other... but please feel free to post landscapes, wedding etc etc...

Actually, you know what I would really like.  Is that the administration spell out what this site is for.

As from my reading even members are not sure.  Some say its for models and photographers only. Others think it is a general site for people who are involved in the industry, pastime or passion we call photography irrespective of the members work area.

I would seriously like to know.

And I would note, I have seen several photographers of quality dissappear from this site, maybe due to that confusion.

If it is a site for all photographers then lessen the work load, put less but a more balanced display in the featured gallery. As this is the default page for non members when they first visit. Currently it has 90% model images in the first 100 images and 30% implied, topless or nude.

What does that say?

If its a model site then.  Fair enough.   Let it be.

Can I be blunt and say I wish we got praise for all our work on the site than another "addition" to our work load.

No, you can't! It's a well established universal fact that you will almost never hear from people when things are running well but you will almost always hear from people when they are not happy with something. I know this from many years working in various customer service and support roles. And in fact, complaints should be encouraged at every opportunity. If not, then one runs the risk of simply losing the client (or, in this case, a member) without knowing why and worse still, they will tell their colleagues and this only exacerbates the situation. Better to hear a complaint directly from the aggrieved party and have a chance to address it, than to hear it second hand from several of their colleagues when it's too late to do anything about it.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, just something I had to get off my chest!

Well that explains everything, I have been completely oblivious to that fact.

I guess I should just pull my images and stop going against the inevitable flow.

Shame though as i thought a more open wider remit would be very positive for the industry here, networking, info, etc, sourcing, work opportunities, jobs, etc, etc,.

Thanks for the enlightenment.

Art the predecessor was IMAPP (Irish models and photographers).

What was its predecessor.   I only joined a year ago for the reason that this was a local site relative to Ireland and covered a wide range of the industry here.

Perhaps a solution would be to get some volunteers from the founding community members to help select. There are plenty of members with the neccessary photographic skill and aesthetic capability to do it. That way the workload of running the site would be eased. They could be rotated so no-one gets overloaded..ie week at a time.

What I am thinking  is this, new people coming to the site for the first time would get the impression that it is 100% model work. Where in reality, and correct me if I am wrong, it is an open site for anyone working in the photographic field, in Ireland.

For the record I do lots of model work as well, I work in all areas and I am only passing an observation here. I have seen work by other 'new' people slip by which I thought deserved featuring, though it was not model focused.

I did praise you hard worked souls when you introduced the featured gallery and also when you upgraded....and will continue to so, this I hope is only taken as constructive observation not slagging.
