Silence is golden ... or is it ?
Posted On 06/10/2008 13:03:33 by Sensor

First off let me just say that Im not a great blog writer, or any kind of writer in general, but I have a question for anyone whos willing to answer.

The background to which, is this ...

As a photographer in dire need of advice, I joined this site, lashed up a few photo's, said something about wanting to develope and then sat back and waited for some words of wisdom directed at helping me see where Im going wrong, if thats what im doing.

Problem is, I dont seem to be getting any .. words of advice that is.

But that's given me a bit of a dilema. Am I not getting any criticism because Im so superfantastic theres noen to give, or is it because Im so crap no one wants to hurt my feelings, or is it because people on here generally dont offer criticism, or is it all of the above, some of the above or none of the above.

Ive had a few comments, which were very welcome and mean a lot, but as for anything that will help me improve my standard, zippo.

So heres my question ...

When you dont get a reaction to your work, how does that make you feel?

(I'd especially like to hear from photographers on this one.)

Many thanks for those replies. I really appreciate them. It seems that the running advice is to have patience. Although to be honest, patience isnt one of my strong points .. but Im trying!!!

Thanks also for pointing me in the direction of other areas on the web where I might get some solid feedback, but I kind of like this site and will continue to post onto it.

Theres a lot more to this photography lark than just point'n'click.

If all the images posted had as much time and creative thought put into them as yours, it would uplifting.  You are obviously  passionate about your photography and are willing to experiment and that comes over in what you are doing.  I am not sure what your post production software is, it gives the tone mapping associated with HDR when applied to signal image exposure. Its an interesitng effect which I personally like experimenting with.

As far as commenting on images, sometimes I really feel to, more for the fact that occassionally I find that some posted images seem to ignore every single rule of photography, I would'nt mind that but the same images lack any creative feeling or atmosphere. I am left wondering what the frig is the purpose.....but I bite my tongue.

I think everyone can learn for constructive critique. Maybe a good idea would be to post your own comment about the image as the first comment in the box and then openly ask for constructive comment.  I sometimes do that to give the image posted some context.

But I will keep in mind your desire for input in the future.

I don't post too many comments for various reasons.  The reactions are symptomatic of our society today - good people and and bad.  I think your work is excellent and would love to able to copy it myself (the most sincere form of falltery there is).  However I am so paranoid about upsetting people who might ask why I didn't comment on theirs I don't comment too often.
My take on criticism is that a person has to expect bad as well as good otherwise you don't learn.  A lot of think of telling what is wrong with a person's work as being negative.  Look at the number of people in the sudience of shows like "Strictly Come Dancing" who boo when something wrong is pointed out even when it is said in a constructive manner to help improve.
I look at people's work here as showcases of what can be achieved and try to better my photgraphy.

I rarely comment on a picture unless it is exceptionally good then I will say so, that way you can't go wrong or cause offence.  But I agree that is not what a lot of people are looking for, they want constructive criticism from which they can learn and improve their work, that is how it should be.  However I used to do this then I got attacked to the point of rudeness with nasty comments as to who did I think I was etc, not very nice, so I stopped doing it.   This is more a people forum and proably not the best place to get feed back on landscapes.  Finially I think your two photos of the QE2 are terrific. you got a good viewpoint with good lead in lines ond your post processing is first class, well done.

Hi

I feel there are a few reasons why members don't critique pictures on folio, there are some members that do not like negative feed back on their work and some  bickering has entailed, members are wary of whom to critique openly on the picture, I personally have no problem with critique as long as it's constructive, in my view everyone can learn from critiques, over the past year members seem to email me more with their thoughts on an image so this might happen to you at some point,

Folio32 no matter what we feel it should be has a high percentage of model photography, most photographers and models will comment or critique more on these types of images, I personally would like to see more landscape etc images displayed, but I feel that as I'm  a pretty poor landscape photographer I can't really give advice on some elses work.

On the whole Folio32 members are pretty polite (most of the times) lol, many think if you haven't anything nice to say then say nothing.

Personally I think your pictures are great, I wouldn't really change anything, they stand up on their own, as I couldn't do it better then I can't give any advice on making them better.

If you are looking for critique on your landscape pics then there are many such sites you could look at and post onto, photosig it one and photo-b.net is a fantastic spanish site ( sorry admin if I'm not supposed to mention other site) but you will definately receive more critque on these sites, though some critques maybe not what you want to hear lol,

hope this helps and keep up the good work,

regards

Tim

Well I guess on this one you need to be specific, either if you have a questio about light or composition or whatever....but to answer the question if you work is outstanding you will get many compliments and replies. But even if I get some compliments or advice I dont sit there and believe I am the greatest I keep at it and use the advice for the next shoot. If you dont get any reaction you just carry on until you get one....but this site is open enough to ask any questions you have in regards of photography and techniques.  But just joining this site to get some reaction wont really help you....Hope this answers it :)

And by the way dont sit back and wait keep chasing and kep shooting!

I don't post to get comments, I post because you have to have a couple of images or you get tossed (with good reason).

You want words of wisdom? About what?
