Windows Vista

Having recently installed Microsoft Vista in anger on one of my machines I have to say I am disapointed. There is not much in the way new (useful) features and the default security setting would drive you to drink.

Having defeated the security and installed my default suite of products I think I may have wasted my time and I may revert to  WinXP. I have seen only one advantage, with Lightroom and thats because Vista allocates more memory per application so it no longer complains about lack of memory which it did under WinXP.

What a waste of my time......

I still experience the odd problem with Lightroom 1.2 running out of memory though it is slightly better than 1.1.  It seems to be caused when frequently jumping between the library and develop modules and ultimately causes weired issues with the program that are resolved only by restarting the application.

My main machine has 4GB of which 3GB is usable (WinXP/Motherboard limitation) plus I have a laptop running Vista with 2GB RAM. Vista can use more memory physical than WinXP and also allows each applications access up to 3GB of RAM rather than the 2GB limit of WinXP . I suspect this is the real reason I see fewer problems with Lightroom on the laptop (maybe dual cores help as well).  My library has 50K+ images mainly RAW or very high resolution TIFF film scans.

Anyway Vista gets another week or so and if I am still not happy I will try to avail of the Microsoft 'downgrade' program.

There' shouldn't be so much of a memory issue in the latest versions of Lightroom... 1.2 was rewritten to try and get rid if them for once and for all...

I would agree that you need at least 2GB RAM for it to run smooth and probably another 2GB for all your applications as well, in particular the RAM hungry ones. I know lots of people that have had major compatibility problems with Vista when it comes to connecting your camera to your PC. Anybody I know has gone back to XP or switched over to Mac. Its worth noting that XP will be phased out over the coming months.
