Critique? Yes or no?
Posted On 06/07/2008 14:52:14 by ThorstenM

Arising out of a discussion on one of Ciarans threads in the forum, I've put up a poll on critiques in an effort to try and gauge just how many people really would like to have some critique on there images and perhaps get a more critique activity going as a result. Please head on over to the Poll section and cast your vote. If you can't find an option there that fits in with whether or not you would like critique, feel free to post your comments here.

Good comment by LisaCassells by having the option to turn off comment acceptance on your profile, and its maybe something that should be thought about in future developments of this site.

I personally love feedback, good or bad. I've even gone to the trouble of downloading images that have had suggestions for making it a better shot, and then made those changes and uploaded it again.

I say 'Bring it on', if I see a good image, be that a pose, clothing, hair, make-up I'll comment. Be that for a mod or a tog. However I don't do constructive anymore, cause some peoples skins are thinner than wet tissues.

I find inspiration from this site, and frankly, I'm stunned by some of the photos I see here, they (for the most part) are amazing. But please please please, no party pics, mobile phone pics taken at arms length or licking the face of your best mate in some random night club clinch (talking about models here). And togs, use the timer setting at least once on yourself. It would be nice to know your face if I bump into you in the street

I, for one, would love critique! I am only starting out and I really want to learn so getting advice from professionals is greatly appreciated!

I agree with LisaCassells on all her points. Critique is as hard to receive as it is as hard to give. Not everybody is "thick-skinned", some people are quite fragile and being on the receiving end of criticism that is not thought out correctly could be taken as a personal jab. So, think before you type!

I also do not see the problem with models commenting on images. Everybody has an opinion and is quite entitled to it. Models may not know much about photography but do know about hair, makeup, clothes, poses etc.

Regarding the rant about text speak, unfortunately that is everywhere. I'm not a fan of it myself but the majority of young girls and boys (future models perhaps?) are using it. Not only is every word abbreviated but now they are replacing letters with numbers, i.e. E is now 3. It's so hard to read! I'm confused!

I'm veering off topic too so ill be quiet!

Yes Nexus I understand what your trying to portray, I also hate when girls coe on & comment the likes of ' awh u luk gorg chick, wer'd u get that dress'...but then again it seperates the models that want to be taken seriously to those who are just on here for a laugh...and it's not that hard in my opinion to do that by taking a look at images, the chat on the pages with other people & what they say about themselves in their profile! I do know a few girls who have on their profile that they love going out to get 'blocked' or 'stoned' at the weekends....How can you expect to be taken seriously with this on your profile. Yet the person i'm talking about seems to have shoots from a few different photographers. Maybe because she does it tfp or maybe because the photographers don't care...but to me I treat it like a job application- I would tell me potential future employer that I'm into drugs or drinking copious amounts of alcohol most weekends. Why do these people get taken serisouly? I don't quite understand!

Anyway, I'm verring off the subject so I shall shh now!

No I think that critque is good, it helps as a model to know the opinion of someone else- be it a tog or model, be it more or less experinced. As long as you are not slagging the person off & it is constructive then I think it's fine. No-one will make it anywhere in this worl if they can't take a bit of advice from their peers!

Esp in the modelling industry- go to London for a casting, they might tell you your too fat, you too thin- your ugly. Some may laugh at you! You gotta take it & move on- prepare you for the next chance and show you that maybe your doing something wrong!

I think it is RIDICULOUS to say models should not ba allowed to comment on pics- there are plenty of models on here who know the difference between a good image & a bad image! Models are not completley stupid!!!! I may not know the technicalities of photography or all the lighting set ups blablaa- but I work for a photogrpahy studio in which my days are spent seeing images, judging if they are quality or not, which ones are to be edited & how to edit them so that when the people come back to view them they will love them and spent hundreds if not thousands of pounds on them...
So I don't think anyone has the right to say a model should not eb able to critique- if that's the case then why don't we say togs cannot critique on a models image on their pose, their look, their make up. You may not know how to apply make up- but you know when it makes a shot look bad or when it makes all the difference to an image!

I think perhaps people should be able to decide in their profiles if they want critque, so those who want it can get some feedback and those who don't want comments on their pics there is no option to leave feedback on them!

The way this could work, is if we had a critique forum, or used blogs to request critique. I don't think direct critique on the images is the way to go, especially if you don't know if it's appreciated, or worse, unwanted.

Good Poll Thorsten - Its an issue that keeps coming up here,  I'd go one further and ask is there a way we can see if someone is critique friendly in the profiles ?

critique is good! anyone who thinks that they are "amazing" straight away needs a reality check. someone elses eye will always spot what yourself hasn't seen or ignored, and that can only make further images better.

my own examples would be colour banding and lighting in the older pix in my port, and then the newer ones a lil better (i hope)

Thorsten,

I am certainly up for critique.  What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!!

Ps Thanks for the advice on the monitor calibration devices. Bought the Eye one device.
