Hi all, something I wasn't aware off on this site was the ability of a viewer to save and download the images on the site. I thought it was protected in some way to prevent this. My friend recently viewed my gallery and downloaded them all and put them onto a digital photo frame. Whilst I don't mind him doing that, I would mind if others did it as I am thinking of selling them to pay for my photography. i realise they are small j-pegs but even so!! is there a way i can protect them? I see some people put a copyright banner on their pics but would that prevent people from making a copy and sticking it on their wall? I doubt it. What are your thoughts on this subject?

Hi
You can download any image of any site with the right software if not the "right click and save as" available in browsers.
This is not a problem specifically of this site and wish you edit your post as such.
To answer your question..post image files as low res as possible so it can't be printed but still give viewers the quality they need for online viewing.
There is no total protection from theft of images as we have seen recently from another member. There are just measures to make sure as little abuse of your images happens as possible.

I would suggest that you size them to about 80-100K if you are worried, and put copyright on them, but at 80-100K they are pretty much unprintable. tim

Hi Mike just had a look at you pics, wonderful stuff, I also noticed that your width settings are 700 or more pixels, you don't need them thats big as Folio picture engine resizes it down, try the max width in pixels as 500, you wont notice any difference in folio, but it will reduce the file size and make it even less likely that someone can nick it. tim

Lemme have look,i l try to download them too. joking
But still, even they re prrotected, you can get them out of 'source' saving it dont want to make people do such things,as some people don't know how to do that, but someone must know what i mean.
I ve beed pulling stuff of some 'very' protected sites, also there s such option, put slight watermark across.
Last night i pulled about 200 songs i wanted to have instead of buying.
I m working on 'something' right now,and images has watermark,it s hardly noticabe, and stops people from using them.

The only way to prevent anyone from taking your images is not to post them in the first place! Any image on any site on the internet may be copied by anyone at any time. In fact, the very act of viewing an image will result in a copy of that image downloading on to the viewers computer in the browsers cache. The best you can hope to do is to make the image reasonably small, as has already been mentioned. Adding a copyright "watermark" can help deter image thieves as well and makes it quite clear to anyone thinking of taking the image that they are breaking the law if they do so. - Thorsten.

Grrr. Cant figure how to get them off my own site,it s in construction.
Not the one i m linking to,but different one.
Well,i always said..learn to protect and break your own stuff, and you will others

Went to kitchen wanting to cook soup, but something came in my mind-what about asking/making suggestion to admins to get 'site own' watermark.
I edited post as removing my pixes or putting off other people with that would not solve the problem.
Thanks

Images can be copied as stated in replys below .. bur can be resized smaller to reduce the risk of reasonable prints.. can also be watermarked in large characters across the image .. Ariane studios has reduced the risk of right click and copy (which is the norm way) see what yu think www.arianestudios.co.uk but even this is useless against determined copiers .. so be it ..

As everyone else has said, it's possible to grab just about any picture you can view on your screen. There are even programs designed to automatically download every picture from any site the user wishes, including the ability to find hidden folders etc (web spiders). Other programs such as 'offline browsers' make it possible to download entire websites, even if they are located across several different servers, and recreate a working copy of the website on the user's hdd. On the other hand, it's probably unlikely that any commercial organisation would download images to sell them. Keeping images you post fairly small and saving at low resolution would make it difficult to produce a quality print from them.
