Hey people, Do any of you have camera insurance? I like to do on location photo shoots but sometimes I do worry about getting mugged. So for peace of mind, I think I'd like to get some insurance. Any advice appreciated. regards Sam

Insurance isn't going to prevent you from getting mugged, but it can help after the fact if your gear is stolen. You should be able to insure under your house insurance, unless you engage in photography on a professional basis in which case your house insurance is of no use to you. Best thing is to contact your insurance provider and check with them.

Aye, I know it won't stop me from getting mugged but I won't feel so bad if I can claim it back.

Thorsten is right as I have recently put mine onto my house insurance, it is not as costly as I had expected! As said before this is for non professional use, if so you would need a separate policy!

I have my camera gear insured with PJT Insurance (http://www.pjtins.ie/). They're a broker. It's just for my gear, and I find them great. Thankfully, I haven't needed to make any claims. This is for commercial insurance of the gear. Before that, I had it listed as part of my home insurance contents. That wouldn't cover for commercial work though.

I can only stress the point....if you make 'any' money from your camera, even as small as selling a few prints. Do not put it on your house insurance or you run the risk of it being nulled. Insurance is a frigging nightmare....and its one big rip off....but neccessary if you are earning from your gear...no matter how small. A

I met a chap at an event who shot a friends wedding - basically shot it for teh cost of printing - somehow tripped someone with his gear and got sued ! Think most insurance policies have a public liability benefit too in case stuff like this happens. Also think that home insurance companies include photography gear as one single item - so if you have a decent camera and a few lenses etc.. their total value exceeds the "single item" value on a domestic policy...

When you think about it Insurance is a real frigging rip!!....if you add up all your insurances and then think about that over a few years? I had to take out a public liability insurance for third parties while working outside, insurance for the studio, public liability for those who come into the studio, gear insurance, travel insurance....business insurance for the car (although that is small).... You can now take out insurance to protect your insurance!! What is the world coming too You need one insurance to make the other one effective!! Some places I have been wanted to see my insurance policy before I did my work..and others ask if I had done a risk assessment!! Be aware when travelling also.....some insurance companies will not cover areas that the Foreign Office has warned is dangerous or iffy! Which I guess will soon be the whole world (I personally feel and probably am more safe in the wilds of Irian Jaya than the street of my hometown after 11pm) but insurance companies dont use logic in their decisions. So you could be half way through the year with your insurance and suddenly a country is deemed unsafe....but your insurance company will not write to you and tell you that! I only found out when I went to renew mine and realize my insurance had been nulled in two countries I visited. Sorry about the rant!! But I feel better! Art

I got a qupte from FBD Insurance for 500 Euro. 300 Euo for PL and 200 Euro for equipment. Considering that you could get sued for the simplest thing these days, The piece of mind that you and your eqipment are covered, can not be counted in monitory terms. Also if any body is covering weddings, most places these days look for your PL insurance proof before letting you in to shoot. Ken...
