Spencer Tunick and his instillations.

ok a question what do people here think of Spencer Tunick a good photographer, someone who latched on to an idea that made money ,someone who has real talent.

Is it just to be different !!!!!!!

I was wondering because I also saw on TV one night a New York cabbie who drives around sticking his press and shoot camera out of the cab and shooting while driving around he published a book and got rave reviews !!!!!!

There's no doubt in my mind that Spencer Tunick is an artist. But the art isn't the photographs he creates, but the event itself. The photography itself is nothing to get exited about and exists merely to create a record of the event r piece that he has created.

Installation Art, is generally, by its very nature ephemeral. The great thing about Spencer Tunicks installation art is that it allows ordinary members of the public to become the art itself and I think that's a significant factor in his success.

I agree with Throsten... and I would add that in terms of art or talent, just because i something doesn't appeal to me personally doesn't reduce its artistic merit.

I remember that New York cabbie story , its from a few years back before I was into photography that much and I remember thinking thats a brilliant idea..  A cab eye view of one of the biggest fastes cties in the world.  Different strokes and all that

Recently I heard about a another cabbie in NY (might even be the same guy who knows) who worked for 25 years driving and would turn around every now and and take pictures of his passengers.. Imagine that 25 years of fashions, styles and social behaviour change recorded in a taxi !!

I'd love to see that :)  part of my long and vague point is that alot of the time in art its difference and originality that appeals .. in photography for example images of people from different cultures, images taken from different perspectives, etc
