The stars/half star beside the usernames mean? And also the numbers? Is it something to do with how much we're posting or whatever??

I was wondering about that too.

 

No idea about the stars, but the number seems to increase the more you contribute to the site - comments, post in forum etc.

Exactly. And I think there may be some evidence of that already here. It happens on every forum. Some people just like having the highest number of points, so they engage in posting "fluff" simply to increase their score. Nothing you can do about it really, except to acknowledge that it exists and not read too much into a high points score.
