In my heart it shows, look what they've done to my dream.

Hi! Great site!!
I want to model and I need help! I want to do Belfast fashion week, and be in magazines etc. I have done NO modelling mainly because I am scared I'll get laughed at and rejected. I personally think I've got the bare essentials of bod and face but I've got bad skin and stretchmarks. I hate even typing that but hopefully those with experience can advise me whether to not bother!
Also, I'm 24 now, is this too old to start? How do you become a model in NI? Thanks!!!!

The fact that someone told me they thought I was the 'spitting image' of actress Camilla Belle! I didn't know who she was, but after googling her I have to say I am VERY flattered. People tell me I look like loads of people and I've always disagreed, but I'm pleased to say I actually can see a resemblance this time! It has given me fresh encouragement to pursue modelling.

Bad skin. I have been very blessed in life and am generally happy but please indulge me as I rant about acne and the affect it has had on my life. I feel like it's the reason I'm not a supermodel right now. (No seriously!!) People can say I should have tried anyway yadda yadda but unless you've had this you seriously don't know the affect it has. No agent wants a model with acne so how could I have made it happen anyway. Now my skin is sort of clearing up but I've got scars and I'm getting too old. It breaks my heart to think of what might have been. DESPITE this I'm trying to get agencies in Ireland interested in me, I will let you know what happens. :)

Isabella,

What makes a model sexy is when she FEELS sexy!
I have skin problems (you will see the bumps in my untouched pics in my port) and don't do any exercise or eat well so my body is not up to par.  I still get lots of modelling offers (and unfortunatley some are in Belfast which is too far away for me to travel to!).  When you are happy wih yourself everything will work out well for you.  A big cause of acne is STRESS.  Feel free if you want to email me privately.
All the best

Wugget

for the record I completely agree with Tim on this one :).

Also few photographers will offer there services based on blind faith alone. You really should pop a pic or two up on this. Good Luck, Glen

Hi ya.

Having read your poll I see that over 70% said it wouldn't matter, so I don't know why you would be depressed, thats a pretty good score,

I think what you really need to do, having looked at your profile page and seen that you don't have any photos upload, is to put a couple of pics up, these don't have to be professional ones, have a friend or parent take them on a digital camera or even camera phone, before you take them put your makeup on, one should be a head shot and another full length, then photographers can judge for themselves, at the moment you are an unknown quantity.   if you want email me a couple of pics and I will let you know what I think. timcul4@hotmail.com

You also stated in the poll
'a photogenic and attractive model arrives for a shoot, but she has bad skin.

This is an important statement, (Photogenic and attractive) If you are both of these then skin conditions can be sorted in photoshop, add to this, hard working, fun, professional outlook, all go to make a good model worth shooting,

There are many models with skin problems who with the right makeup and a pofessional outlook get lots of work and have fun doing it.

There are also some models/girls who think they can just arrive at a shoot without decent makeup and poor styling who expect the Photographer to make them look good, I for one will put less into a shoot if this is the case, If the model isn't well prepared then I won't put the time in after they leave,

I would rather a model arrive who has fully prepared herself, if she then needs some extra work on skin problems then I will put in the work,

to finish can I say that modelling isn't for everyone, on this site I have seen wannabe models come and go who aren't prepared to put in the work, one of the main problems with model websites is that any girl/guy can think they can be a model when they really don't have what it takes,

going back to the start, please upload a couple of pics and let the photographers see what you look like, you might be surprised.

I hope this helps.

regards
Tim

I Just voted on your poll and feel i should write to you as I wanted to pick between all answers and coulnd't decided. I would pity someone who had Acne, anyone who says they wouldn't I disagree, but Pity in a nice way as in 'that's unlukcy' I do not think it is the end of the road though. I have spoken to some photographers who have told me about models who are really successful (and beautiful in my eyes) but they've had to spend ages retouching out spots. If people thought of it more like when a model arrives with fake tan that's streaky. Any one will tell you it's a photogrpahers worst nightmare as it takes so long to retouch and the colour never looks right in the end! So what's the difference with that & some spots?

Look at Cameron Diaz- she has bad acne but she's still very sucessfull and one of the most gorgeous women in most men's mags! As long as you can cantrol it a little by maybe eating healthy, not stressing, good skin regime the days prior to a shoot then the most of it can be covered with make up. Maybe you should get some make up lessons to see how to cover it best you can!? as someone else has said, focus on your best bits, not your worst. My teeth are not perfect straight- that's my worst feature and what bugs me most about myself- but I'm sure most people will not have noticed as I can hide it by perfecting my smile to show only the best bits...it's all about flaunting what you do have and finding ways to deal with what you don't have.

No way, you're not too old to start. Don't worry about your imperfections, you'll be amazed when you find out all the other 'blemishes' everyone else has. Market yourself on your good points and not your bad points (although always be honest), and don't be afraid to pay a good photographer to get good images.
