Pre-shoot advice
Posted On: 18/07/2008 07:40:35

Following on from the forum post. Note this is not intended to offend but to offer guidance where needed to assist new models understand pre shoot preparation.

Most models have the professionalism and experience to understand the requisites of pre shoot preparation, however some don’t! Turning up looking like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards is unhelpful……..

The following list is aimed at giving a little advice to help inexperienced models prepare for a shoot. Feel free to add your own pre-shoot advice, hints and tips.

Week leading up to shoot

  • Shave legs, armpits and appropriate areas at least 2 days before the shoot to prevent rashes and inflamed areas.
  • Wash and Iron Wardrobe, polish shoes, boots etc and pack into a suitable case or bag. Leave the tesco’s carrier bag at home.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid tea, coffee and red wine as much as possible.
  • Apply fake Tan at least 4 days prior to shoot (if needed, if not don’t tan) streaky patchy tans are unsightly.
  • Colour hair at least a week before shoot, if it goes wrong you have time to make it right!
  • Prevent late nights as much as possible, and get some sleep especially the night prior to the shoot.
  • Adopt a skin cleansing and moisturising routine to help prevent spots, blemishes, blackheads, and unsightly rashes.
  • Adopt a nail care routine, or buy and apply fake nails the night before the shoot or first thing on the morning of the shoot. Clean and manicure your nails!
  • Inform the Photographer/MUA if you have any allergic reactions to specific makeup products.
  • Inform the photographer if you suffer from hay fever, dust allergies etc.
  • Pack and Bring your own towel and makeup if preferred.
  • Bring comfortable shoes such as trainers to avoid walking up a mountain in high heels as an example!

Day of shoot

  • Wash, condition and brush hair.
  • Have a shower, bath and use a deodorant.
  • Moisturise prior to shoot.
  • Wear loose fitting garments to prevent unsightly indentations to waste line, ankles, boobs etc.
  • Try to avoid wearing makeup foundation that has high concentrates of titanium dioxide, better still don’t use any makeup until requested to do so or applied by a MUA.
  • Bring your own moisturiser and cleansing wipes to a shoot. Products you are used to and unlikely to cause you skin issues, hygienic too.
Bring your own brushes and combs for hygiene purposes.

Its more about getting all factors right pre shoot, and in answer to your question yes some new models do.

does anyone actually turn up to shoots looking that uncared for? i.e. hairy legs, greasy hair, orange make up/fake tan? lol

I would have to agree with Lolo on the shaving issue, 2 days if far far too long, stubbly would not be the word!

As for the fake tan, every photographer i have ever worked with despises the stuff, i never ever use it no matter how pasty i look when i am doing a shoot. Forget about streaks, i don't want to look like Dale Winton's armchair in the shots. Its a serious pet hate for photographers and something in my opinion that ruins a model's look, no matter how stunning she is. Photoshop can't fix the luminous orange glow!

Loloray
all points have been verified thanks over many many years of experience.
If it wasnt necessary do you honestly think I would bother to write a blog to assist some new models prepare pre shoot!  Presentation is key to gaining an end result and the whole point of the blog.

Whilst your comments regarding tea/coffee and red wine may have some merit regarding health issues, they still do stain teeth! Go figure huh.

Fake tan and shaving believe it or not are issues most photographers face regularly, stubble and particularly streaks from poorly applied tanning agents are common issues and I for one and I am not alone refuse to spend hours post production rectifying something that could have been addressed pre shoot! Go figure huh. Again presentation is the key word.  Sooner have a pale natural model than the tango kid lol

Nor do I really care what other photographers do to prepare themselves for a shoot and certainly wouldnt dream of advising a photographer what, how, to prepare as its not them I would be shooting now is it.   (most of us are at the back end of a camera for very good reasons.....we're ugly sods ) if a photographer asked me directly for advice I would of course be happy to assist.

But thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts

I like the idea of giving tips to newcomers, and I think I recognise some of these points from other people's blogs across the internet.
However the points regarding shaving and fake tan are plain ridiculous (particularly the shaving one), as I'm sure anyone who is experienced with them can verify. e.g. An underarm shot of a dark haired girl who has shaved two days ago is not going to work.
Then, regarding the tea/coffee - Ideally models won't drink either, however if someone has a caffiene addiction there is no point coming off it the days coming up to a shoot. Regarding red wine, studies show that in small quantities, it can actually be beneficial to the health, as it has shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and can act against ailments such as cancer due to its antioxidant properties.

Certainly there are a few good points there, but maybe you should only post the points you have verified, or perhaps stick to how a photographer should prepare themselves?

Finally - the point Nodz makes below is a really common request from MUAs.

this is really helpful , good idea !!! how ever i'd recommend washing your hair the day BEFORE the shoot because it will give you hair a chance to get back some of it's natutral oils so it's shiny and healthy looking x x x
