What is great photography?
Posted On: 04/08/2008 14:21:51

A reply left in this thread has me wondering just what is good photography?

Is a photograph to be judged by the degree of difficulty and effort involved in creating it, the harder the effort, the better the image, or is there some other criteria by which we can use to say "Now that's a great photograph!" I'd be very interested in hearing readers opinions on this.

I think the confusion from the previous thread is not WHAT makes a
great photograph, but WHO. In the Pirelli example, the photographs are
great, but it was a team that created them, not just the photographer.
Consider a model shoot may involve the roles of photographer, model,
fashion stylist, hair stylist, makeup artist, art director, set
designer, location scout, and probably many others.

On a high end commercial shoot each of these roles may be covered by a lead and several assistants.

On a typica amateur shoot all of these roles are allocated between two people.

Comparing a fashion shoot with photojournalism in a war situation is apples and oranges.

As to your question above? For my thoughts, read http://www.pflanaganphoto.com/good.html

Thats a very hard question to answer my friend.

Usually when I view an image on the outset, If its a great image it pops of the screen at me, its only after I will really look at the elements and how the image is pulled together, now I know that our brains are working all the time, eyes giving us all the information from 1st looking at the image, but for me, I'll take a much deeper look into the image after I decide whether I LIKE IT, looking for the light source, and the surroundings,

Some of the Images I like best are simple, though locations can really make for breath taking photography, as in the other forum post, which I have just watched, (how long are those girls Legs  )

I often think that on location, the location itself is what makes for a successful image, I love images from other countries as they are different, when I'm in Spain and look at wedding photographs I feel they are so much better than here, why? because the locations are so different to here, other countries have the same effect, it could be because I am so used to the local countryside and locations that I really don't see the beauty around me,

Mostly though a good image is what’s in the eye of the viewer, what I will like others won't, but having a great location, top models, fashion, MUA and Hair really does help.

In the world of top photographers they usually have to work to a brief, everything is taken care of by the client, though they still employ the best photographer they can afford, the one they think can tie it all together, his/her input to the final image cannot be made light of, as he conveys to the model the pose and creates the final image,

So take heart people, there are some quality images on folio, many have been shot with the model doing her own styling, make up, the photographer has set up the lights, taken the readings, photoshopped the final image,

I've always wondered about that but haven't quite come to a concrete conclusion. For the moment, I believe what matters is the final image. It doesn't matter how you get there, as long as you succeed in conveying whatever it is you intend to convey with your final image.
