"Photographs to Treasure"
Posted On 17/04/2008 13:23:14
When I started as a professional just over 20 years ago I decided to use "Photographs to Treasure" on my Adverts etc. In todays "Newsletter", on page 3, there is a photograph of the recently deceased "Dickie" Best holding a framed photograph of his son George. Now of all the photographs that he could have picked, this is the one he lifted off the wall. Some 25 years ago a friend and myself arranged for George to attend the annual "Festival" in my home town of Aughnacloy. It was during one of his "dry" spells and was a real gentlman and a pleasure to work with. He posed with the locals and I took the photos..(for a small fee) I took this photo of him and my friend posted a copy to Dickie in Belfast. They framed it and hung it on the wall in their hall.

Let me introduce you to Miss Nicole McAleer.

Nicole races her GP125 Honda at rediculous speeds, round the circuits the British Isles, at the British Superbike Championship Rounds. She's from Omagh and is the only female from Ireland to compete in this prestigious Championship. 2008 will be her 3rd season racing at this level

OH! she's 16 next month!!

Have a wee look at her Web site...

Don't bother?
Posted On 15/02/2008 20:37:37

The longer established members of Folio may have noticed I usually have something to say about the images posted on here. Mostly constructive as I feel that if an image is that bad it's not worthy of a comment.

As most of the suggestions are aimed at the photography rather than the "modelling" I just wondered if any of you have taken any of my comments into consideration before pressing  the shutter?

Is it "Old School" to recognise the importance of posing either by the photographer or model or is it the "New" 21st century thing to not bother with such things.?

Sometimes I feel like a school teacher "marking" homework by suggesting the "established" way to enhance work presented.

Are people in this modern age happier with a lower standard of product from anyone with a digital camera than they were when photography had more of a mystery and craftsmanship associated with it?

A mates observation...

Love the pictures from the shoot with Emma, Jim.  Beats me why more of the 'models' on here are not beating a path to your ever open door.....??

Ross posted this last Wednesday, the day after Emma had been up to my Studio. Since then quite a number of both photographers and "Models" have looked at and commented on the resulting images...thanks and all that but...

Not one request to work with me.

Now don't get me wrong I'm a Professional photographer and hear the sound of the cash register instead of "click" when I press my shutter but it has puzzeled me for a while now why would be or established "Models" don't want something for free. I think it was the start of last year when I had a commissioned "Portfolio" shoot.

I look on this type of work as a form of enjoying my photography again without the pressure of a commercial gain, thats why I do it for free as CDFT.

I don't lose sleep over this at night  but would like to know a bit about the mindset of the female members here as to who and why they decide to work with.

Oh!...and don't all start feeling guilty now and offering to come along as most of those on here have been aware of who offers what

"Style"
Posted On 08/02/2008 10:25:18
I suppose I do have a particular "Style" to my work. Like most of the noticeably photographers who post here, after a while you can tell who they are just by looking at the image. There is nothing too new in photography really, it's just the way you approach the subject to get what pleases you at the end of the day.

I have been inspired by other photographers over the years and have attended more workshops and seminars than I can remember. There is a belief these days that all you have to do is buy a Digital camera and talk someone into letting them get their photo taken and "voila" there is a new "Photographer" and "Model" advertising their services.

Yes you do have to start somewhere and it can sometimes feel like a "Catch 22" situation but both photography and modelling are an art form which should be learnt!

Any girl on here who I've had the privilege to have worked with, hopefully received images worthy of their portfolio but also tips on "posing" and how to present themselves in from of a camera.

There is no real secret to taking an acceptable photographs but a few rules, if followed, can save hours in processing. I see so many times images posted whether full length or head and shoulders which would have looked so much better if the photographer had taken the time to "fix" the hair or adjust a hand or move a light. Instead I feel, they get too distracted by the subject. Think ahead to the finished image and not be distracted by the subject in front of you whether they be clothed or unclothed!!

There is no quick fix I believe. It's down to practice and experience and if you are the "Camera Club" type..."The Seeing Eye"

It's never been easier for people to get into the Photographic industry than it is now. Give anyone a modern digital camera, send them to a Wedding and they could probably get 24 images from the hundreds shot to put in a wedding album.

Are they now a Wedding Photographer?

Send them to one of the Studios you can hire, pay for an equally inexperienced model and show half a dozen images, again from the hundreds shot.

We now have a new "Glamour photographer"?

I was once just a keen amateur who decided to make photography my livelihood. I remember well my first wedding but unlike portraiture it was something you couldn't "practice"

Folio32 is a fantastic opportunity to learn and gain experience for both photographers and models alike. You only get out of it what you put in. It still amazes me when experienced models post images either out of focus or on a mobile phone. Similarly photographers posting images with shadows on walls behind and not colour corrected.

Give yourselves a standard and try to keep to those.

Please be gentle with me when replying as these are my personal thoughts and general observations

Jim

Enjoyed that...!

Thanks to Ross for another great day down at Lurgan Studio. Hope I didn't offend anyone with the wee tuition class as I know what it is like for someone to try to "teach granny how to suck eggs..."

The craic was great and I hope the ladies enjoyed it and will get some good images as well as some experience. Hope you's kept your vests on after i left.....time will tell when the fellas get posting the shots.
